town centre redevelopment, shirley

Shirley Advance

This major £40m town centre redevelopment is a joint venture between Solihull Borough Council and Helical and is operating under the name of Shirley Advance.

The main objective for the project was the need to retain the retail attraction of Shirley especially with the competing new developments in neighbouring boroughs.

Nicol Thomas has been involved from the initial concept through Public Inquiry, assisting the client with complex compulsory purchase orders, and right through to the implementation stage.

To free up land for the redevelopment there was a need to assist with the relocation of several existing tenants including the British Legion, Solihull Christian Fellowship and a Scouts facility.  Nicol Thomas were further appointed to reconfigure the Baptist Church on the site and create a new design, off site, for a new £1.2m Solihull Christian Fellowship Church.

The new development consists of a 70,000 sq.ft retail unit for Asda, additional 65,000 sq.ft retail units, 200 residential units and provision for 600 cars in an underground basement car park.  All of which had to be accommodated in a very restricted site which was further constrained, to the southern boundary, by a park and an avenue of trees.
